Managing Diabetes in Winter
1. Winter Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic disease that literally causes sugar to escape through urine (urine, urine).
It is said that the prevalence rate has been increasing even among young people in their 20s and 30s due to changes in the high-quality and oily diet and lack of exercise.
Hyperglycemia requires continuous management due to its effects on organs in the body such as blood vessels, brain, eyes, and kidneys, but hypoglycemia is often more dangerous for people taking diabetes medication because it suddenly causes a lack of sugar in the blood. Therefore, it is recommended to carry candy or biscuits with you for emergencies.
Type 1 diabetes is not common, and most people have type 2 diabetes, so there is a risk of hypoglycemia in the summer due to excessive sweating, while in winter, the cold can cause various diseases due to increased blood pressure caused by blood vessel constriction, so more caution is required.
2. Principle of Diabetes Management
The only way to prevent, treat, or manage diabetes is to expel more nutrients than you take in. In other words, output > input.
The management of input, that is, what comes into the body, is ultimately determined by the food you eat, so eat a balanced diet. If you do not consume sugar from white rice, white bread, etc., it is thought that there will be no major problems.
There are various ways to expel output, such as urine, feces, sweat, and energy consumption. Since urine and feces are ultimately determined by input, energy consumption through sweat and exercise is possible.
Therefore, output should be greater than input, meaning that you should expel more than you take in, which is the same as dieting.
3. Method of Diabetes Management in Winter
If the blood sugar level is 6.0 or lower in a 2-hour post-meal blood sugar test, it is considered normal, up to 6.5 is considered risk group, and above that is considered diabetes and requires management.
- Diet management: The endocrinology department of the hospital recommends consuming a balanced diet of the five major nutrients, but it is not easy for busy modern people to do so. It is okay to buy firm tofu for frying and store it in the refrigerator and eat it whenever you have time.
- Walking exercise: It is not easy to go outside and exercise in the winter because it often snows and the ground freezes. You can walk the recommended 10,000 steps without overdoing it, depending on your lifestyle. 3,000 to 5,000 steps a day is also good.
- Stress management: It is easy to feel that stress is the root of all diseases, and moderate stress is actually beneficial to your health. It is also necessary to make a small task to do in the morning, such as walking, and to spur yourself on to achieve it in the afternoon.
